The National Highway Authority of India is constructing two new cuts under the flyover on the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway between Patiala Chowk and Kohinoor Dhaba point to ease congestion on the stretch and giving an option to commuters to take a U-turn in the market rather than taking a long detour till the Lohgarh cut.
Made operational in 2009, the first flyover of Zirakpur was aimed at providing relief to local residents from traffic congestion and giving free passage to the Delhi-bound traffic. However, the situation deteriorated from bad to worse over the years.
Congestion, wrong side driving, waterlogging, stray cattle menace and unruly traffic have become the bane of local residents and businessmen here.
The new cuts are being created at a cost of about Rs 30 lakh to streamline the traffic, officials said, adding that the work would be completed by March 31.
The first cut is being carved out in front of NK Sharma Road and the second in the vicinity of the vegetable market near Preet Colony.
It is expected that the traffic load at Patiala Chowk and Kohinoor Dhaba Chowk would reduce once these cuts come up. This would also check driving in the wrong direction, a major cause of accidents here.
