The Theatre Arts Group presented a Punjabi ghazal concert ‘Ikk shaam Punjabi ghazal de naam’ featuring globetrotting vocalist Sunil Dogra at the Mini Auditorium here today.
Group president Rajiv Mehta, while introducing the artiste, said the programme was a tribute to the mother tongue of all Punjabis.
Sunil Dogra opened up with a soulful ghazal ‘Rehbar saade hanere wich’ and ‘Peedan da vanjaara..’ by Punjabi poet Bhupinder Saggu, which were well received.
Dogra continued to spell magic with rendition of thought-provoking ghazals ‘Saveraa si kade’ and ‘Vilkada unglaan ch chhalla’ and more by poet Jaswant Wagla.
Audience relished the ornate poetry of Ustad shayer Gurdial Roshan like ‘Kadde mitti kadde paani’, ‘Zindagi na zindagi tere bina’, which made many eyes moist. After a ghazal ‘Bachpan wich jithhe’ by Kanwaljit Kanwal, Sunil honoured audience’s request to dole out ‘Shiv Batalvi’s ‘Shikra yaar’ Meri ghazal da matla, Mitti da Bawa, Tum ko dekha and hothon se …’ immortalised by ghazal samrat Jagjit Singh. — OC
