Patiala, January 15

A garbage dump near Multipurpose Government Primary School has turned out to be a nuisance for students as well as the staff.

Teachers and students have complained to the authorities in this regard a number of times, but to no avail. Interestingly, there are seven educational institutions in the area but the authorities have failed to shift the garbage dump. Moreover, just 50 meters away is situated the office of the Block Primary Officer.

A teacher at the school, Vinod Kumar, rued: “Earlier, coming to the school was a joy, but here it is like a torture for students as well as teachers. During monsoon, the problem aggravates.”

“How can the district administration and the MC authorities be so inconsiderate? If nothing is done to remove the garbage, it is going to take a toll on the health of schoolchildren,” said a parent.

School principal Bhupinder said, “We had written to the district administration and the Municipal Corporation in this regard, but to no avail. The garbage must be shifted to some other place. Otherwise, it will impact studies and the health of students.”

City Mayor Sanjeev Kumar Sharma said, “We will install a compactor at the site for the collection of waste. This is being done as part of the project under which smart semi-underground dustbins will be installed in the city. The project will be started within a month to ensure that people do not suffer.”
