A 17-year-old Class XII student of a private school in Chandigarh reportedly died after jumping from the fourth floor of a shopping mall in Phase 11 around 10 am today. The boy, a resident of Phase XI, was depressed for the past sometime, his father told the police.

The incident was captured on a CCTV camera of the mall. The teenager is seen calmly walking into the mall and then sitting in the food court on the fourth floor. He buys a bottle of water, walks around and then jumps from the floor.

Mall officials reported the matter to the police, after which the boy was taken to a hospital in a Police Control Room vehicle. He died after a few hours in the hospital, said Phase-11 SHO Gagandeep Singh. The police said they were investigating whether the child was depressed due to studies or some family reasons. He is survived by his younger brother and parents.

On the statement of the deceased’s father, the police have initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the BNS. The body was handed over to the parents.
