Chandigarh, August 9

Relatives of a student entered the premises of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 45, and allegedly beat up two teachers, including a woman.

According to Principal Anita Sharma, who is holding the additional charge of the school, Hindi teacher Rishi Kumar had scolded a Class XI student for indiscipline following which he called up his parents.

His mother, brother and sister, along with two or three other people, reached the school and entered the campus by claiming that they had been called. They reached the class, entered into arguments and allegedly misbehaved with Rishi.

“I have been told that a scuffle ensued and they beat up Rishi with a helmet so much that the helmet broke. A woman teacher, Sapna, who was teaching in a nearby class, tried to rescue Rishi, but she was also beaten up,” said Anita Sharma. Even students tried to intervene.

The police had to be called, who took both parties to the Burail police post. “The matter ended in a compromise. A daily diary report (DDR) has been lodged. Both sides alleged that they were beaten up,” said a police official.

District Education Officer Anujit Kaur said, “The department has sought a report from the Principa. Before rusticating the student, we need to know what has happened.”

Unions condemn incident

Santosh Dhull, president of the Government Teachers Union, condemned the incident. “Rishi sir did not want to spoil the career of the student, so he agreed for a compromise,” said Dhull.

“We condemn the incident and call for securing teachers in schools. How can a teacher maintain discipline in such circumstances,” said Savinder Singh, chairman of the Joint Action Committee.
