A woman teacher, Sarabjit Kaur, was shot dead by an unidentified person outside her school in Sunny Enclave, Kharar, around 8 am today as soon as she parked her Activa scooter. The assailant is yet to be identified, the police said, adding that he had covered his face with a shawl.

Sarabjit Kaur used to teach Punjabi and French at Knowledge Bus Global School in Sunny Enclave. She was residing in a flat in SBP Homes near Chajju Majra Colony. She used to come to the school on her Activa along with her daughter Radhia, who is nearly five years old. Her daughter was also studying in the same school.

The police said she came to the school on her Activa along with her daughter. As soon as she parked her Activa outside the school, the suspect came there and opened fire at her. She died on the spot.

The assailant was seen roaming in the area and opened fire when she came there. She was taken to the Civil Hospital, Phase 6, Mohali, where she was declared dead by doctors.

The Kharar Sadar police have registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC and under the Arms Act against an unidentified person on a statement of Raj Kumar, father of the deceased, who resides in Mohali. The victim’s father told the police that his daughter had got married in 2012 and then she moved abroad.

She started visiting her parental house only for the past about a year and started teaching in this school.

Though her daughter was with her at the time of the incident, the assailant did not attack her.

According to the police, at least three bullets were fired at her, which hit her in the stomach, neck and face. The police have started scrutinising the footage of CCTV cameras installed on the road. In one of the CCTV cameras, a car is seen stopping in front of the assailant after he committed the crime. It is suspected that the assailant escaped in this car.

Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal and Kharar DSP Simranjit Singh Lang visited the spot. The SSP told reporters that the victim and her husband used to live in France and their daughter was also born in France. He said nothing could be said at the moment about the murder and the police were investigating several aspects.

Kharar Sadar SHO Amandeep Singh said it was not yet confirmed whether divorce proceedings were going on between the couple, but there was a dispute between the two.
