High drama was witnessed when an accused in a case of theft tried to escape from police custody after hearing at the Tehsil Complex, Dera Bassi, here today. However, he was nabbed by the police.

The drama did not end here as the accused injured himself by banging his head against a wall in a lock-up and the police had to take him to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for treatment.

The Dera Bassi police have registered a fresh case against the accused, Rintu, in this connection and started investigation.

Rintu, who was arrested by the Zirakpur police here on Monday, made the daring escape bid after his hearing in the court, which sent him to one-day police custody.

According to information, Rintu was brought to the Dera Bassi court by the Zirakpur police in connection with a theft case registered against him and another person, Rajneesh (17), at the Zirakpur police station. After the court hearing, the accused was being taken to a lock-up at the Tehsil Complex, when Rintu pushed the policemen and managed to escape from the court premises.

Rintu and Rajneesh were arrested by the police after they allegedly stole a car parked in front of a sweetmeat shop in Baltana on January 10.

How drama unfolded 

  • Rintu, who was arrested by the Zirakpur police on Monday, made the daring escape bid after his hearing in the court, which sent him to one-day police custody. 
  • When he was being taken to a lock-up at the Tehsil Complex, he pushed the cops and managed to escape, but was nabbed.   
  • The drama did not end here as the accused injured himself by banging his head against a wall in a lock-up and the police had to take him to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for treatment.
