Thieves strike at farmhouse

Kharar: Thieves struck at the farm house of a Punjab Police officer in nearby Jhanjeri village. Miscreants took away taps from kitchen and bathrooms, besides cable wire. The police registered a case under Sections 379 and 457 of the IPC against unknown persons as per complaint lodged by Sarabjit Kaur Sohal here on Wednesday. The complainant told the police that Nanak Singh, who was living at their farmhouse, informed them about the theft. OC

Ex-serviceman takes poison

Kharar: A 65-year-old ex-serviceman, Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Sante Majra Colony, died after consuming some poisonous substance. The city police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC in the regard and handed over body of the deceased to his family. According to information, the son of the deceased stated to the police that when his father came home on Tuesday, he told family members that he had consumed some poisonous substance. He was taken to the Civil Hospital, Kharar, in a serious condition from where he was referred to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where he died. OC

Police remand extended

Kharar: A local court on Tuesday extended the police remand of husband and father-in-law of the woman, who was allegedly burnt alive after sprinkling kerosene on her over dowry. Earlier, both accused Rupinder Pal Singh (husband) and Ujjawal (father-in-law), residents of Shivalik City, Kharar, were remanded in three-day police custody. They were arrested on the charge of burning Dharamjeet Kaur. A case under Section 304-B of the IPC was registered against five persons in this connection. OC

Panchkula:  Students of Government Postgraduate College, Sector 1, took part in the Best Message Contest organised in association with IBS: ICFAI Business School during Teacher’s Day celebrations here on Wednesday. Insurance pensioners’ meet

Zirakpur: A general body meeting of the Chandigarh Unit of the All India General Insurance Pensioners Association was held at a local hotel here on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by 155 members, who had come from different states. They discussed number of issues relating to those, who retired from the general insurance industry. Joginder Singh, president of the Chandigarh unit of the association, spoke on main issues concerning retirees and steps being taken by the body at the centre level to get these addressed.
