Traffic violations: 2,052 challaned in city on Holi

CHANDIGARH: As many as 2,052 traffic challans were issued by the UT police on Holi. While 1,334 of these were issued for riding two-wheeler without helmet, 130 pertained to drunken driving.

As many as 2,052 traffic challans were issued by the UT police on Holi. While 1,334 of these were issued for riding two-wheeler without helmet, 130 pertained to drunken driving. Cops also impounded 565 vehicles for traffic violations.

The traffic police and cops from 16 police stations had laid nakas to check traffic violations and deter youths from indulging in hooliganism.

The traffic police alone issued 1,308 challans for various offences at various points in the city on Holi. Police officials said a special drive was conducted against offences, including drunken driving, speeding, riding two-wheeler without helmet, triple riding etc. As many as 863 challans were issued for helmetless riding, 149 for triple riding and 130 for drunken driving. Traffic cops also impounded 337 vehicles and recommended around 200 driving licences for suspension.

Besides, cops from 16 police stations challaned 744 vehicles and impounded 228 for various offences at 64 nakas across the city. The police said 112 were issued ticket for triple riding, 471 for riding two-wheeler without helmet and 161 for other traffic violations. 

Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements with around 860 cops deployed in the city ensured the Holi celebrations conclude peacefully. 

A police official said a special focus was given on curbing hooliganism, rash driving and eve-teasing incidents. The entry to the gehri route between Sectors 8 and 11 was barricaded at various points to stop hooligans from driving on the roads. Holi revellers said they missed the charm of driving on the gehri route.

The UT police also arrested 59 persons under Sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC.

Cops checked vehicles at nakas and seized a large number of egg trays from cars.

24 hurt in P’kula clashes

panchkula: As many as 44 persons, who sustained injuries in various accidents in the district, were admitted to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6 here on Thursday. Further, 24 persons, who were injured in clashes reported from various parts of the district, also reached the hospital. Civil Surgeon Dr Yogesh Sharma said no major incident was reported in the district and the injured were discharged after providing treatment. The OPD functioned round the clock on Holi to meet any exigency, he said. Meanwhile, 13 cases of drunken driving were reported from the city. PCR vans kept patrolling sensitive areas in the district to keep tabs on anti-social elements. —TNS

33 booked for drinking in public

The police booked 33 persons for drinking at public places. The violations were reported in Sectors 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 25, 22, 23, 26 and 43 besides Sector 42 lake, Mani Majra, Industrial Area and Khuda Ali Sher.

Gehri route wears deserted look

The gehri route wore a deserted look as anticipating rush on Holi, the police had restricted the entry of vehicles to the internal roads of Sectors 8, 9, 10 and 11. Barricades were laid on both ends of the roads connecting these sectors.

PCR receives 323 calls of brawls

As per the police, the Police Control Room (PCR) received 585 calls on Thursday, following which PCR vehicles were dispatched for police assistance. Out of the total calls, 323 related to brawls during Holi celebrations and 67 pertained to accidents. Besides, 31 calls were regarding nuisance created in the area. The remaining 164 calls were about other matters.
