Tribune flyover: Work on replanting trees takes off

CHANDIGARH: City-based environmentalist Rahul Mahajan has begun the process to replant trees coming in the way of the Tribune flyover. Mahajan, along with his team, today started the work of pruning the trees, which will be replanted at other suitable places in the City Beautiful.

The uprooted trees will be replanted at Nagar Van near Sunkha Lake or a few metres away on Dakshin Marg.

City-based environmentalist Rahul Mahajan has begun the process to replant trees coming in the way of the Tribune flyover.

Mahajan, along with his team, today started the work of pruning the trees, which will be replanted at other suitable places in the City Beautiful. The digging work around the trees has also been started. Mahajan said it would take 15 to 20 days to replant a tree.

The uprooted trees will be replanted at Nagar Van near Sunkha Lake or a few metres away on Dakshin Marg. The digging work for replantaion at Nagar Van has also been started simultaneously. Mahajan has offered to replant all trees free of cost. Mahajan will carry out the replantation, while all necessary infrastructure such as JCB machines will be provided by the Chandigarh Administration. As per the plan finalised recently, the Administration will try to replant around 150 trees.

Sources said of the 545 trees coming in the way of the flyover, 400 would be axed, while the Administration would replant 150.

Mahajan has successfully replanted over 100 trees so far in the city and nearby areas. A number of mango and kikar trees on Dakshin Marg in the Industrial Area, Phase I and II, are coming in the way of the flyover. Environmentalists are opposing the felling of trees.
