Tributes were paid to martyrs, who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil war, at the Major Sandeep Shankla War Memorial in Sector 2 here today to mark the Kargil Vijay Diwas. Haryana Speaker Gian Chand Gupta saluted the Kargil martyrs. He also paid floral tributes to Major Sandeep Shankla during the programme.
Colonel Naresh, Secretary, Zila Sainik Board, Panchkula, Major Sandeep Shankla’s father Colonel JS Kanwar, Brigadier Kiran Krishna, Lt Col SS Kalia, Admiral Sunil Lamba, Lt Gen Harcharan Singh, Lt Gen Raj Sujlana, Lt Gen KJ Singh, Lt Gen P Bakshi, Major General Pushpendra Singh, Air Force Group Captain RK Sethi, Col Pandey and other retired Army officers were among those who paid tributes to the Kargil martyrs.
Gian Chand Gupta said in the Kargil war, 527 soldiers of the Indian Army were martyred and many were injured. He said some of the soldiers, who sacrificed their lives, were also from Haryana.
Gupta said a five-member committee had been formed in Panchkula for the maintenance of war memorials and memorials of martyrs. He said the Municipal Corporation would provide the amount to be spent on the maintenance of all these monuments.
70 donate blood at camp
Chandigarh: To mark the 23rd Kargil Vijay Diwas, a blood donation camp in support of the Army was organised by a local NGO, “I Am Still Human”, here on Sunday. Over 70 persons donated blood on the occasion. In addition, 100 persons also registered themselves for organ donation. A “Kargil Vijay Diwas Ride” was also conducted through the city to express solidarity for the Kargil War heroes.
