Trucker suffers heart attack, girl loses arm in Zirakpur

Mohali, July 21

A Class IX student of Guru Gobind Singh Public School, Dhakoli, lost her arm after a truck ran her over near the railway crossing here on Thursday. Sources said the driver of the truck suffered a massive heart attack and lost control of the vehicle. He later died at the hospital.

According to the police, victim Aarti Kumari, 14, was returning home after school when the truck, bearing Himachal registration number, laden with interlocking tiles hit her and its tyres ran over her right arm near the Dhakoli railway crossing.

The girl was taken to the Dhakoli Community Health Centre, from where she was referred to the GMCH-32 and further to the PGI, Chandigarh.

According to information, some passersby didn’t realise the driver, Shyam Sundar, had suffered a heart attack and allegedly thrashed him after the girl was injured. Later, he was taken to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital, where he died during the treatment.

Dhakoli police station SHO Sub-Inspector Hardeep Singh said doctors at the Dera Bassi hospital confirmed the truck driver had suffered a massive heart attack and died while undergoing treatment.

He said people thrashed the driver without realising he had suffered a heart attack.

Girl’s father Baijnath said a student informed them that their daughter had met with an accident and they rushed to the Dhakoli dispensary, where they were told she has been referred to GMCH-32. He said Aarti was undergoing treatment at the PGI.

The SHO said they were yet to register an FIR as the statement of victim’s parents was yet to be recorded.

He said the body of the truck driver had been kept at the mortuary of the Dera Bassi hospital and that his family members had been informed. — TNS
