Two friends killed as Thar rams into bike in Chandigarh

Two friends were killed after a speeding SUV rammed into their motorcycle at the Kalagram light point in Manimajra here last night.

The deceased have been identified as 46-year-old Gulsher Ali and 44-year-old Abdul Subhan, both residents of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, the SUV, a Thar, was being driven by Armaan (18), a resident of Sector 22, Chandigarh. He is the son of a head constable posted at the Chandigarh Police Headquarters.

The police said the accident occurred around 11 pm when the two friends were on their way to a relative’s house in Manimajra. They had arrived here from Saharanpur on February 21 on a motorcycle and were staying with their relatives.

The motorcyclist applied the brakes at the Kalagram traffic lights as only a few seconds had remained for the green light to turn red. The Thar coming from behind allegedly crashed into them with great force. While Gulsher Ali died on the spot, Abdul Subhan was rushed to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) by a passer-by. However, doctors declared him brought dead.

The SUV driver fled the scene. Witnesses managed to note down the vehicle’s registration number and informed the police. A team from the Manimajra police station found the vehicle parked near the Dadu Majra cremation ground. The accused was subsequently arrested in the vicinity.

Police officials said no driving licence had been recovered from the accused so far. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

The two friends taught children at a madrasa in Saharanpur. Gulsher is survived by five children, while Abdul leaves behind four children.
