Two persons were injured in an alleged attack by the mining mafia near Abhipur village in the wee hours of today.

According to information, two members of the ‘action committee against illegal mining’ and also the residents of the said village, stopped four trucks which were reportedly conducting mining near Abhipur village. They also called up the police and the Mining Department to the site for action. However, before the police could reach, some people arrived at the spot and attacked them with iron rods and fled with the four trucks.

The injured, Sukhdev Singh and Ranjot Singh, were taken to the General Hospital in Sector 16, Chandigarh, from where Sukhdev was referred to the PGI. Two vehicles belonging to the committee were also damaged in the incident.

Meanwhile, Kharar MLA Kanwar Sandhu demanded that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by an SDM-level officer should be constituted to put an end to the menace.

Mohali Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan promised immediate action and deputed Kharar SDM Himanshu Jain to handle the case. The SDM then visited the site to take stock of the situation and deputed a tehsildar to record the statement of Sukhdev.

DSP Gurvinder Singh said the other party was also in the Civil Hospital, Kurali, and the police would take action after recording the statements of both parties.
