The district court has imposed a fine of Rs 500 each on two persons for throwing waste material in the open in 2016. The Municipal Corporation (MC) had filed a complaint against Ravi, a resident of Sector 55, Chandigarh, for offences punishable under Section 400 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act.

It was alleged that on May 30, 2016, the accused was found scattering waste material at public place. In the court, Ravi pleaded guilty and did not claim trial. However, he pleaded leniency on the ground that he was the sole bread earner of his family and there was no one to look after his family. Ravi said he would not repeat this offence again.

The court of Judicial Magistrate - Class I (JMIC), Geetanjali Goel, observed: “The allegation against the convict is not of serious nature that should warrant his confinement behind bars. Therefore, in the interest of justice, the convict is sentenced to pay a fine of Rs 500.”

In another case, the MC had filed a complaint against Sahil, a resident of Sector 45, Chandigarh. It was alleged that Sahil had thrown waster material at public place following which a complaint was filed. The court of JMIC Meenakshi Gupta observed: “Keeping in view the nature of offence of the convict, he is hereby sentenced to pay a fine of Rs 500.”
