Medical devices group from the Design Innovation Centre at the UIET, Panjab University, has been granted a patent on “Wearable Apparatus for Determining Goniometric Readings of a Body Portion of a Subject”.
Rashi, Sahil, Varun and Poojita – students from different engineering branches – led by faculty investigators Dr Prashant Jindal (Mechanical Engineering) and Dr Mamta Juneja (Computer Science) took more than three years to develop the apparatus.
The device has been designed and fabricated within the UIET lab in consultation with physicians. It would ease diagnosis and early detection of finger/hand related joint disorders.
The motion and grip sensing glove can be used to capture movement of individual fingers and joints of a human hand along with gripping capacity/force which provides valuable information to physiotherapists, orthopaedics and surgeons for early detection and diagnosis of various defects leading to loss of strength in joints, nerves and muscles.
“This glove is aesthetic, comfortable, user friendly and enabled to show user’s real time data as well as progressive recovery graphs for any period of time through a mobile application. A treating physician can therefore monitor and advise the patient remotely while the patient uses this glove at his/her home,” said Mamta.
The invention was funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Design Innovation Centre. It has also been granted a seed fund of Rs 4 lakh by the AICTE.
