Uncertainty surrounded the hosting of the Star Night planned by the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) president on Wednesday evening, after Panjab University reportedly postponed all events on campus following a firing incident near the Department of Botany last evening.

While Panjab University remained silent on the issue, sources in the top brass claimed that approval for the Star Night, featuring singer Satinder Sartaj, is still pending with the office of the Deputy Commissioner. Some media reports have suggested that the vice-chancellor has called for the cancellation of the Star Night and postponement of other events. Professor Renu Vig, however, remained tight-lipped when contacted by the Tribune for confirmation.

The claims by sources also raise questions, as the university had already approved the hosting of the Star Night at the campus cricket ground despite the pending administrative clearance.

Meanwhile, despite yesterday’s firing incident, another Star Night event went ahead as scheduled at the UBS grounds near the Students Centre during the ongoing Jhankaar fest.

On Tuesday, some accused entered the campus on a two-wheeler and, on reaching the parking area near the Department of Botany, fired two shots in the air to threaten a former student leader who was present at the spot. The accused then fled via the Ankur School road towards the temple inside the campus, before snatching a motorcycle at gunpoint at the Sector 25 junction.
