Sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have nabbed a head constable (HC) of the UT police while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000.

The accused has been identified at Head Constable Dalbir Singh, who was posted at the Proclaimed Offender (PO) and Summon Cell. He was arrested from the Sector 34 market.

CBI sleuths had received a complaint from Harbhajan Singh, who works as a clerk at a bank in Sector 34.

Sources said Harbhajan had a case of cheque bounce pending against him in the District Courts, Sector 43. “The cop was threatening the complainant to pay him bribe in lieu of not arresting him in the court case,” CBI officials said. Harbhajan approached the CBI following which a trap was laid and the cop was nabbed while accepting the bribe money.

A case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, has been registered against the cop. Searches are being conducted at the houses of the accused in Morinda, Ropar district, and Sector 41 in the city.

  • The CBI has already arrested three cops, including an SHO and an additional SHO, this year.
  • Sub-Inspector Rajbir Singh, additional SHO, Sector 31 police station, was arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 10,000.
  • The SHO of the Mauli Jagran police station, Inspector Baljit Singh, and Constable Surender Rathi, were arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 45,000.
