Almost a month after two political factions entered into a bloody brawl, which resulted in the death of a local woman who died due to medical negligence, eerie silence prevailed in Takhtu Majra village in the Ghanaur block of the district.

While Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders claimed that a faction led by local MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur has terrorised some villagers, Jalalpur said that Akalis are unnecessarily politicising the issue with baseless allegations.

Residents have even boycotted the SAD workers and many of them have not even returned to their houses due to fear of arrest.

While the political upmanship continues, children have stopped playing in the open and parents do not allow them to go out and mingle with each other fearing violence. “I have told my no to go out alone as the entire atmosphere in the village has changed in the past one month. No one talks to each other and even village functions see invitees from political parties only,” said a few villagers, on the condition of anonymity.

“Our only concern is that hatred, spread by some politically-inclined persons, should not engulf the village”, said an elderly.

Following the incident at the village wherein a sarpanch supported by Congress was brutally attacked at the Government Hospital in Rajpura, allegedly, by the SAD-backed supporters, the village seems to have been politically polarised. The villagers have allegedly boycotted the families of the accused.

“The sarpanch family had made some religious comments from the village gurdwara and a dispute erupted. When both parties reached the police station, the Congress supporters attacked the SAD supporters inside the police station and no one helped our men,” said senior SAD leader Bikram Majithia, who today led a delegation of SAD leaders to the village.

“Later, some Congress workers along with policemen got admitted to the hospital to get a case registered against our supporters. Following which some of our men attacked the sarpanch and his supporters inside the police station. I condemn both factions. However, instead of sorting the issue out, Madan Lal Jalalpur ordered the police and the local panchayat to boycott SAD families,” Majithia said.

Sanaur MLA Harinder Pal Chandumajra said Congress supporters asked the villagers to stop interacting with the family of the accused. “Jagir Kaur who was bed-ridden due to health ailments could not get due medical attention as his husband and other relatives were hounded by Congress goons and the police,” alleged Chandumajra, who discussed the entire issue with the SAD president following which a delegation today visited the village.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA Jalalpur claimed that the SAD theory is baseless. He said first his supporters were attacked by SAD workers inside the hospital and later police booked 10 of them. “This bitterness will only spread and I request SAD leaders not to politicise the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police said that they are keeping round the vigil so that law and order situation does not arise. “We are not taking any chances as tempers are high following the recent developments,” he said.
