Windstorm wreaks havoc on Chandigarh

Trees, electricity poles, signboards uprooted | Vehicles damaged | Traffic disrupted | 2.9-mm rainfall in UT

Chandigarh, April 7

Rain, accompanied by a windstorm, lashed the tricity last night, uprooting trees, electricity poles and signboards in several areas.

Trees and branches fell in Sector 27, 28, 30, 31, 20, 34, 18, 16, 5, 8 and 9, Bapu Dham Colony, Ram Darbar and the Industrial Area, Phase II.

At some places, vehicles got damaged after trees fell on these, while at some places, traffic got disrupted for sometime. The MC horticulture wing had a tough time managing the situation. Officials kept receiving calls from different parts of city for removal of tree branches which had fallen on roads.

RC Sharma, a resident of Sector 18-C, said a tree fell on his car and its bonnet got damaged. A branch of a tree broke an electricity pole, resulting in damage to a motorcycle.

He said he started calling the MC helpline from 8 am, but got a response from them at 10.15 am when they registered his complaint. He said the windstorm lasted an hour.

The Chandigarh Meteorological Department said the city recorded 2.9 mm of rainfall yesterday.

The weatherman has predicted a clear sky in the coming days. The Met Department today recorded a maximum temperature of 34.8°C, two degrees above normal, while the minimum was 18.2°C, one degree above normal.

People go sans power in Panchkula

Residents experienced power cuts between 11 pm and 4 am in various sectors following rain and a thunderstorm on Tuesday night. At some places, including the Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, trees were uprooted.
