AMBALA: A woman was killed and 50 injured, 15 of them seriously, when a speeding private bus overturned on the Ambala-Hisar highway near Matehri Chowk, close to Ambala City, this evening.

A woman was killed and 50 injured, 15 of them seriously, when a speeding private bus overturned on the Ambala-Hisar highway near Matehri Chowk, close to Ambala City, this evening.

The bus was moving at a high speed. The accident took place when the driver applied brakes and turned the bus in a bid to avoid hitting drums placed in the middle of the highway to keep the speed of vehicles under control. In the process, the driver lost control over the bus following which it overturned.

The police reached the spot. The bus was lifted with the help of cranes to rescue passengers stuck inside it. The bus was on its way back from the Shiva temple in Arunaya, it is learnt.

The injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital where one of them was declared dead, while at least 15 were shifted to the PGI in a critical condition. The deceased has been identified as Kanchan Sharma, while the seriously injured include Simran, Madhav, Nishu, Saksham, Kusum Lata, Monica and Himanshi. They were among those referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. Most of the bus passengers were from Ambala. — TNS
