Chandigarh, February 17

A 43-year-old woman lost her jewellery, cash and other valuables after an Ambala resident, whom she had met through Facebook, gave her some sedative-laced drink at a hotel and stole her belongings.

The suspect had created a Facebook profile in the name of Sidharth Sharma, who claimed to be from Ambala. He befriended the victim after which both started chatting through messenger. After around six months of friendship, they decided to meet.

The suspect asked the victim to meet in Chandigarh. On Wednesday, they went to a hotel in Sector 22.

The police said the suspect offered some sedative-laced drink to the victim following which she fell unconscious.

Taking advantage of the victim’s condition, the suspect stole two gold tops, two gold rings, a mobile phone and Rs10,000. He then escaped from the hotel. The victim later gained consciousness and found her valuables and cash missing. She informed the police following which a case under Sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison with intent to commit an offence) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC was registered.

The police said an investigation had revealed that the suspect had created a fake profile to dupe the woman.
