Kharar: A 43-year-old woman, Vandana Khatra, a resident of Shivalik City in Kharar, was killed, while her husband suffered serious injuries when the Activa scooter they were travelling on was reportedly knocked down by an unidentified car near Mullanpur Garibdass village on Monday.

According to Mullanpur Garibdass Station House Officer Rajesh Hastir, the victims were returning to Kharar after attending a religious congregation at Nia Nagar near Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. She was taken to the PGI, where doctors declared her brought dead. The police have registered a case against the unidentified driver of the car. OC

Seminar at Ropar college

Ropar: The Chetna Nasha Virodhi Lehar, an NGO, organised a seminar to stop wastage of foodgrains at Government College here on Tuesday. Bharati Sharma was adjudged first. Akpreet Kaur and Tamann Sharma shared the second slot, while Nitesh Kumar was declared third. Prof Vipan Kumar said nearly 20 crore people were facing food shortage. On the contrary, due to lack of storage facilities in the country, only 5.67 metric tonnes of foodgrains were damaged in Punjab between January 2009 and February 2017, he said. TNS

Spelling bee contest at UILS

Chandigarh: The Literary Society of University Institute of Legal Studies, PU, organised intra-department spelling bee and just two-minutes competition on Monday. The spelling bee competition witnessed the participation of 20 students. In the just two-minutes competition, Imaan Singh Khara was adjudged the winner, while Jaideep Singh Lalli and Surner Singh bagged the second and the third position, respectively. In the spelling bee competition, Tejsavi was declared the winner, while Shtantika was awarded the trophy for the second position and Bhumija for the third. TNS

Phone snatched

Chandigarh: A bike-borne miscreant snatched a mobile phone from a pedestrian on the road separating Sector 15 and 16 here on Tuesday morning. Sources said the miscreant riding a Bullet snatched the phone. The registration number of the bike could not be noted down. The police rushed to the spot on getting information and started an investigation. TNS

Live mortars: case lodged

Chandigarh: The UT police have booked an unknown person under the Explosive Substance Act, 1908, in connection with the recovery of three live mortars at Ram Darbar on April 13. Garbage collectors had noticed the mortars lying in junkyard near the vegetable market, Ram Darbar, Phase II. A case has been registered under Section 4 of the Act at the Sector 31 police station. Property tax help desks

Chandigarh: To provide one-stop solution to property tax-related issues, the MC has decided to set up 20 counters at its office in Sector 17. Besides, a counter of Sampark Centre will also be opened at the office so that residents could deposit the tax online. These decisions were taken during a meeting held on Tuesday. MC Commissioner KK Yadav directed officials to ensure residents do not face inconvenience while depositing tax. The department has been sending notices to defaulters to deposit the dues. TNS

Uprooted tree damages car 

Mohali: The swift car of a Phase 9 resident was completely damaged after a tree got uprooted due to high velocity winds yesterday night and fell on the vehicle. Jagjit Singh, owner of the vehicle in his complaint to the police alleged that he had parked his car outside his house on Monday night. He said when he woke up in the morning, he saw 40 to 50-ft tree  fallen on his car. TNS

5 assault govt official, booked

 Kharar: The police have booked five people for assaulting and using criminal force to deter GMADA’s Assistant Engineer Harminder Singh from performing his duty. The accused have been identified as Bala, Krishan Kumar Malhotra, his son and two un-identified people. The accused have been booked under Sections 353, 186, 323, 427, 148 and 149 of the IPC. TNS

One killed in hit-&-run

Dera Bassi: A 40-year-old man died after he was allegedly hit by an unidentified vehicle near Janetpur village on Tuesday night. The deceased has been identified as Rajesh Sapra, a resident of Haryana.

The victim after having dinner was crossing the road when a vehicle hit him.  He was rushed to the Civil Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. — OC

Travel agent booked for fraud

Kharar: The Kharar Sadar police have registered a case against the owner of Unique Service for cheating gullible people on the pretext of sending them abroad.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Raj Pal Singh said he got a tip-off that the accused was collecting money from the people for arranging a Visa for them. Even today, he was sitting in his office at New Sunny Enclave, Kharar, and issuing receipts to the innocent people after taking money.

A case has been registered against the accused under Section 420 of the IPC and the Immigration Act. — OC

One booked for withholding details of tenant

Kharar: The Kurali police have booked Ram Gopal, a resident of Neholka Road for not disclosing details of his tenant.  Assistant Sub-Inspector Amrik Singh said the accused a case has been registered under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. — OC

Heroin seized

Panchkula: The police have recovered 40-gm heroin from the possession of Nirmal Singh, a resident of Basola village.

The police said they were trying to ascertain the identity of the accused when he tried to throw the packet containing the contraband. — TNS
