A woman and her son were killed when the Innova in which they were travelling was allegedly hit by a truck on the Ambala-Chandigarh stretch near Jawaharpur village in Dera Bassi.
The deceased have been identified as Amarjot Chauhan (27), a resident of Panchkula, and her four-year-old son Sukhtaj.
Kuldeep Singh, ASI, Dera Bassi police station, said that the incident happened when the Panchkula-based family was returning from Ambala after dropping their relatives. When the car reached near Jawaharpur village, a truck which was also heading in the same direction hit the car in a bid to overtake it. The car overturned and its rear door opened following which, Amarjot and Sukhtaj sustained injuries.
Kuldeep Singh said Sukhtaj died on the spot, while Amarjot was rushed to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital from where she was referred to the GMCH, Chandigarh. She succumbed to her injuries on the way.
The police said the car was being driven by Yuvraj Singh, a resident of Panchkula, while Abhisek Chauhan, husband of the deceased, was sitting next to him. Both mother and son were sitting on the back seat of the car. A case has been registered against the unidentified truck driver under relevant sections of the IPC at the Dera Bassi police station.
Meanwhile, the bodies have been kept at the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination.
