Youth acquitted in snatching case

CHANDIGARH: A local court acquitted a 26-year-old youth in a snatching case after the complainant failed to identify the accused in the court.

Chandigarh, July 17

A local court acquitted a 26-year-old youth in a snatching case after the complainant failed to identify the accused in the court. Ajay Kumar, alias Ajju, was acquitted of Sections 379, 356 and 411 of the IPC.

According to the complaint, on July 4, 2017, Kanika Arora of Sector 37 was standing outside her residence when two unknown men came on a motorcycle and sped away after snatching her purse containing Rs 300-400, her college admit card and Aadhaar card. The police later arrested Ajay on July 14 and recovered the snatched items from him.

The defence counsel argued that the police showed the recovery of the snatched articles by stating that they took the accused to Sector 37 where they made the recovery. However, the complainant stated that she obtained her snatched articles from the police station and never saw the accused.

While he was acquitted in the current case, Ajay will remain in judicial custody as he is facing trial in five other snatching cases in the District Courts. — TNS
