Chandigarh: A 22-year-old youth has been arrested for breaking the windowpane of a Mahindra pick-up and thrashing its owner.



Chandigarh: A 22-year-old youth has been arrested for breaking the windowpane of a Mahindra pick-up and thrashing its owner. According to the police, complainant Sushant Kumar, a resident of Mauli Complex, alleged that two unknown persons broke the glass of his Mahindra pick-up that was parked near his house and also thrashed his father on February 3. The complainant’s father was injured in the incident and admitted to the GMCH, Sector 32. The police were informed about the incident, who registered a case at the Mauli Jagran police station. Later, one of the suspects, Pardeep, a resident of Phase II, Ravindra Enclave, Baltana, Zirakpur, was arrested in the case. TNS

One booked for illegal mining

Dera Bassi: The Mubarikpur police have registered a case in connection with illegal mining and have arrested one person. The police have seized a loaded tipper. The suspect, Sangram Singh, a resident of Panchkula district, was later released on bail. According to the police, a naka was laid near Kakrali village here on Monday. The driver, who was coming from the Ramgarh side with a gravel-loaded tipper, was signalled to stop. The police said he could not produce valid documents about the material loaded in the vehicle. A case has been registered under the Mining Act at the Dera Bassi police station. OC 

Purse snatched

Chandigarh: Two Activa-borne miscreants snatched a purse from a woman near the Sector 51 light point on Tuesday morning. Sources said the incident took place around 11.20 am. The victim failed to note down the registration number of the scooter. The police were informed about the incident. They rushed to the spot and initiated an investigation. TNS

Man beaten up

Chandigarh: The police have booked unknown persons for thrashing a resident of Sector 23. According to the police, the complainant, Gurbaj Singh, reported that five persons thrashed him in front of a social club in Sector 7 here on February 1. On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered against unknown persons at the Sector 26 police station. TNS

Eye camp held

Dera Bassi: Over 100 eye patients were examined during a medical camp organised by  GMR Ambala-Chandigarh Expressway Private Limited at the Dappar toll plaza on Tuesday. Free medicines were also distributed among the patients. Vishal Gupta, CGM, NHAI, along with KL Sachdeva, Project Director, NHAI, were the chief guests. OC

MP provides vans to catch dogs

Patiala: Local MP Dr Dharamvira Gandhi on Tuesday provided two dog-catching vans worth over Rs 10 lakh from the MPLAD fund. Dr Gandhi said dogs caught with the help of the vans would be treated for rabies. Recently, dog-bites cases have gone up in the city. A 7-year-old boy at Mehs village was mauled to death by stray dogs. In another incident, a 5-year-old girl was mauled to death by stray dogs at Bhindra village of Sangrur. The Municipal Corporation (MC) had recently started an animal birth control (ABC) programme. MC workers have caught over 500 dogs under the programme. Officials said they had sterilised 490 dogs. Purse snatched 

Kharar:  Two bike–borne persons snatched a purse from Baljeet Kaur, a  resident of Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar,  Kharar, on Tuesday evening. The  victim said she was returning home from work when the incident took  place. The suspects managed to escape. The purse contained an ATM card,  voter card  and a cheque book. She has complained to the police in this  regard. OC 

liquor smuggling case: Man held 

Ambala: The Ambala police arrested a man in connection with a liquor muggling case, registered last year at the Parao police station. The suspect has been identified as Arun, a resident of Rohtak. He was produced in a court, which sent him to two-day police custody. The police had recovered 1,200 boxes of liquor from a truck on a national highway near Shahstri Colony on July 31 last year. Truck driver Gurpal Singh, a resident of Punjab, was nabbed. TNS  

CGC boys clinch tennis title

Mohali:  CGC Jhanjeri boys defeated SBSSTC College 2-0 to win the IKG PTU’s inter-college tennis tournament. The side had earlier defeated GNDEC College, Ludhiana, 2-0, while they overcame DAVIET College, Jalandhar, 4-3. TNS

Junior Hockey trials today  

Chandigarh:  Hockey Chandigarh will on Wednesday conduct trials to select the team for the 9th Hockey India Junior National Championships to be held in Aurangabad from February 17. The trial will begin at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium from 2pm, the sports body said here on Tuesday. Players affiliated to Hockey Chandigarh and born on or after January 1, 2000, will be eligible to participate in the trials.TNS

Prinkle, Harleen in tennis final

Chandigarh: City girls Prinkle Singh and Harleen Kaur beat Madhya Pradesh’s Panya and Sarah Yadav to enter the finals of the U-19 tennis tournament organised by School Games Federation of India in Mumbai on Tuesday. Prinkle defeated Panya 8-2 to give an early lead to Chandigarh but Madhya Pradesh restored the parity after Sarah Yadav beat Chandigarh’s Harleen Kaur 8-6 in the second match. Prinkle and Harleen, however, combined to beat Sarah and Panya 8-5 in the doubles tie to enter the final.  TNS
