CHANDIGARH: A 27-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly raping his neighbour at Dhanas. Sources said they received a complaint from a 24-year-old girl, who alleged that she was raped by her neighbour.

CHANDIGARH: A 27-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly raping his neighbour at Dhanas. Sources said they received a complaint from a 24-year-old girl, who alleged that she was raped by her neighbour. The victim alleged that the youth entered her house in an inebriated condition on Tuesday. He raped her and fled from the spot. The police recorded the victim’s statement and registered a case of rape. The youth was arrested on Wednesday evening. He will be produced in the court on Thursday. TNS

Merc stolen from market

Mohali: A local resident, Karanvir Brar, approached the police with a complaint that his Mercedes car was stolen from the Phase 5 market on Wednesday. He said he had gone somewhere in his friend’s car after parking his Mercedes near a juice stall at the Phase 5 market. On their return, Brar found his car missing. Brar told the police that he had bought the vehicle for Rs 70 lakh three years ago. The police are looking into the matter. TNS

Water supply to be affected

Mohali: The water supply to parts of Mohali and Chandigarh will be hit on Thursday as the power supply to the Kajauli waterworks will remain suspended from 10 am to 2 pm for maintenance work. During this period, there will be no pumping of raw water from Kajauli to Chandigarh as a result of which the evening water supply will be at low pressure, said Anil Kumar, Executive Engineer, Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Mohali.  TNS

Sonu, Pardeep take MC XI home

Chandigarh: MC XI registered a two-wicket win over CLSA XI in a Tricity Premier League match here on Wednesday. Electing to bat, CLSA XI scored 175/6 in 20 overs. Ankit Gupta hit an unbeaten 55-ball 64, while Drupad added 35 runs to the total. Amandeep claimed 3/22. In reply, MC XI reached home with just a ball to spare. Sonu Kumar hammered 59 runs, while Pardeep made 52 runs. In the second match, Glen Mark beat CBI XI by six wickets. Batting first, CBI XI were all-out for 94 runs in 15.4 overs. In reply, Glen Mark XI reached home in 11.4 overs with Shiv hitting a 38 and Umesh chipping in with 20 runs.TNS

Dodgeball trials today 

Chandigarh:  Dodgeball Association of Chandigarh will on Thursday conduct trials to select the boys’ and girls’ teams for the 8th Sub-Junior National Dodgeball Championship and Federation Cup, scheduled to be held at Shahi Sports and Physical Education College, Samrala (Ludhiana), from April 20-22. The trails will be held at CRB Public School, Sector 7, at 4 pm.  Players born on or after April 18, 2002, will be eligible to appear in the sub-junior category trials, while there will be no age bar for the selection of federation cup team.TNS

Namitveer shines with ball 

Mohali: Namitveer claimed a four-for as hosts Learning Paths School, Mohali, registered a nine-wicket win over St Kabir School, Sector 26, in an LPS U-13 Cricket Tournament match here on Wednesday. Batting first, St Kabir boys could only manage 62/9 in 20 over. Namitveer claimed 4/15, while Gunmeeth returned with figures of 3/11. In reply, the scampered home in 11 overs with nine wickets in hand. Chetanaya made 37, while Manthan contributed 15 runs to the chase. In another match, Strawberry Fields School, Sector 26, defeated Saupin’s School, Sector 32, by 49 runs. Opting to bat, Strawberry Fields made 92/3 in 20 overs. Vijay (34) did the bulk of scoring for the side. In reply, Saupin’s boys were all out for 43 runs in 15 overs. Ranvir took 4/12. In the last match of the day, Smart Wonder School, Mohali, beat Vivek High School, Mohali, by three runs. The quaterfinal matches of the championship will be played on Thursday. TNS

National seminar 

Patiala: A national seminar on ‘Reinterpreting the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in Contemporary Context’ was organised by the Department of History, Punjabi University, here on Tuesday. Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Prof BS Ghuman presided over the function and Dr Sukhdev Singh Sohal from GNDU, Amritsar, presented the keynote address. Prof Ghuman said: “We need to understand the incident in modern context. This was a gruesome and brutal attack on innocent people. Whenever there will be a talk on violation of human rights in the world, the Jallianwala Bagh incident will always be talked about”. Dr Sohal said: “We need to reinterpret this tragic incident in order to understand the situations before and after the massacre”. A book, ‘Jallianwala Bagh and the Raj’ edited by the former head of the department of history, Prof Shiv Kumar Gupta was also released. TNS

Students get scholarships

Patiala: Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable Trust gave scholarships worth Rs 1.62 lakh to 24 students on the Punjabi University campus here on Tuesday. The students were given scholarship cheques by Maninder Kaur Oberoi, Trustee and wife of Dr SP Singh Oberoi, in the presence of BS Ghuman, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University. Dr Prabhleen Singh, nodal officer for the scheme, said: “The trust had renovated the arts auditorium at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore and is providing 100 scholarships to economically weaker meritorious students of the university every year,” he said.
