High-velocity winds accompanied by heavy rain that lashed the region late last night caused major disruption across the district. Several trees were uprooted, damaging electricity wires and plunging most areas into darkness.

The worst-hit area was Zirakpur where power supply in some areas was restored after 15 hours. While the Electricity Department managed to restore the supply in most areas between 11 pm and 1 am, in the Pabhat area, it could be restored only by 10.25 am today.

A resident, Vibha Sharma, said they had been calling the helpline number and an official on the phone said they have received over 1,000 calls since last evening. She said the official also informed her that the power supply would be restored in their area by 10.30 am as trees had fallen on wires.

Khushwinder Singh, Executive Engineer, Zirakpur, said the power supply was disrupted after some trees fell on electricity wires due to gusty winds, but it was in most parts of Zirakpur by 1 am. — TNS
