Mohali, June 4

Poorly engineered roads and unauthorised cuts on the Zirakpur highway have resulted in five deaths per km/per year in road accidents.

Shockingly, per kilometer/per year rate of deaths in road accidents on highways in rest of the country is just one.

The statistics were discussed in a special meeting, headed by Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harcharan Singh Bhullar, held on increasing rate of deaths on roads here.

Giving details, Mohali SSP Bhullar said the objective of the meeting was to analyse the cause behind increasing rate of fatal accidents in Mohali and to find solutions.

SSP Bhullar added that during their analysis, it came out that in Mohali, mostly fatal accidents take place between the time slot of 6 pm and 12 am.

“In such accidents, most of the victims included pedestrians or two-wheeler riders. Another interesting fact, which is being noticed, is that the number of accidents on Tuesdays is highest in comparison to other days,” said SSP Bhullar.

During the meeting, a total of 32 accident-prone points were identified, he said, adding that proper measures were being taken, especially at these points, to reduce the number of accidents.

“We have also decided to write to the National Highways Authority of India and local Municipal Corporation/councils to take measures to plug the unauthorised cuts on the main roads/highways, install traffic lights at certain points and make proper arrangements of lights on roads,” said SSP Bhullar.

He added that seminars and other such events to educate people on traffic rules and regulations would also be held regularly here.
