The police have booked unidentified persons for allegedly attacking cops, leaving two of them injured, during a protest after the death of Congress worker Bittu Shah in “police custody” two days ago.

Family members of Bittu had said the police “tortured” him, leading to his death.

Immediately after the death of Bittu, his family members and residents of the area staged a protest by placing the body in front of the Gate Hakima police station.

During the protest, many agitators entered the police station and allegedly attacked the cops, who also made efforts to push them out of it. In the incident, two cops had sustained injuries.

According to the police, the protesters attacked one of the cops with stones and sticks. A video of the same had gone viral the next day in which policemen were seen stopping the protesters, who were armed with sticks.

A case under Section 307, 323, 332, 333, 353, 186, 295, 427, 283, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered against the suspects on the statement of the Lakhwinder Singh, SHO, Gate Hakima police station.

He said, “Constable Navjot Singh had called me up and told that he, along with Head Constable Avtar Singh, had nabbed a person. After reaching the police Station, Bittu Shah expressed that he was not feeling well. He told me that they took him to a private hospital on the circular road. At the hospital, Constable Navjot informed me that Shah’s condition has improved. Thereafter, Bittu’s wife Sapna, along with others, came there. After that, he was allowed to go with them. They gave in writing that Bittu will be produced before the police whenever required.”

The SHO said after about an hour, Navjot informed him that he received a call from one Lucky Bhatti, who said Bittu died at another private hospital. Lakhwinder said he was informed they were coming to the police station with the body.

“I informed senior officers about the incident. Thereafter, around 50 unidentified persons started protesting by placing the body on the road. They misbehaved with cops and demanded a probe. They also attacked police personnel, leaving two of them injured. They also damaged the property of the police station,” he added.

The police have also booked Congress councillor Shailinder Singh Shally, who is considered to be a close aide of Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, and his supporters for allegedly blocking a road and disobeying the order duly promulgated by public servant. A case under Section 188 of the IPC has also been registered against them.

The Congress councillor, along with his supporters, deceased’s family members and residents had staged a protest in front of the Division B police station against the alleged custodial death of Bittu Shah.
