15 snatchings in one week, residents blame police

The city police have a huge number of high-rank officials as compared to other police commissionerates in the state, but even then the city is yet to get respite from a large number of petty crimes, like snatchings which have become a bane for the holy city.

The city has witnessed around 15 snatching instances in the past one week as per the police record. Several such incidents go unreported as victims prefer not to approach the police due to cumbersome formalities and hassles.

The police are still groping in the dark in connection with the sensational robbery wherein a jeweller was robbed of gold ornaments worth over Rs 1 crore around 15 days ago. The victim had returned from Delhi and was going home from the railway station when the incident took place on November 14.

The city police have four Deputy Commissioner of Police-rank officials and seven ADCPs. Besides, the holy city has 20 ACPs at its disposal. However, the rising crime graph has raised many questions over their functioning.

“What is the fun of having so many wings of the police force when it fails to curb snatchings and other petty crimes. Women, traders as well as tourists are targets of the robbers. The city roads have become insecure for women,” said a local resident, Jagdeep Singh.

It is the prime duty of the police to prevent crimes rather than acting after a crime has occurred, said another resident, Sandeep Singh.

Indu Arora, executive member of the Voice of Amritsar, a non-government organisation (NGO), pointed out that an increase in the crime graph shows lack of intent on the part of the police force. “In majority of the cases, police laxity comes to the fore. It is a complete failure of the police as residents feel unsafe in the city. The cops need to pull up their socks in order to nail the criminals,” she said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar said it was wrong to blame the police for everything that happens in the city. It is also wrong to say that police do nothing in curbing the crime. “We have nabbed a number of criminals and notorious gangsters involved in heinous crimes in the recent past. Efforts are being made to nail snatchers. Most of the snatchers are addicted to drugs. They again indulge in such nefarious activities after getting bail,” he said, adding that residents should also remain alert while travelling on roads.
