TARN TARAN: The district police claimed to have arrested seven smugglers and drug peddlers on Saturday and recovered 1 kg of heroin and arms and ammunition from the their possession. Around 11,500 intoxicant tablets and a Rs 3.15 lakh cash was also recovered.

The district police claimed to have arrested seven smugglers and drug peddlers on Saturday and recovered 1 kg of heroin and arms and ammunition from the their possession. Around 11,500 intoxicant tablets and a Rs 3.15 lakh cash was also recovered.

Talking to mediapersons, Harjit Singh Dhaliwal, SP (Investigation), said on the instructions of SSP Dharuv Dahiya, the joint police of Khalra, Valtoha and Khemkaran nabbed Sukhwant Singh, his two sons Kanwaljit Singh and Randhir Singh of Bhura Karimpura and recovered the drugs and weapons. 

The accused were on a Massy-Fergusson tractor without a number plate. Sukhwant Singh had recently come out on bail in a case under the NDPS Act. The SP said Sukhwant was involved in many cases of smuggling across the fence. The suspects have been booked under Section 21, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act by the Khemkaran police. 

The SP further said under the supervision of DSP Sulakhan Singh, the Bhikhiwind police have arrested Gurmej Singh and his son Bachittar Singh of Bhagwanpur, notorious smugglers facing trail in many cases under the NDPS Act. The SP said the Gurmej Singh, who was a former village sarpanch, had built a palatial bungalow, besides purchasing huge property with the money earned from smuggling. 

The police seized one double-barrel .12 bore gun with 22 cartridges, a .315 bore rifle with 12 cartridges, a 7.65 mm pistol with cartridges, a Fortuner and an XUV car. Their associate Rajwinder Singh was absconding, said the SP.

The accused have been booked under Section 27-A, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

The police have also nabbed Jasbir Singh Gora of None and Kashmir Singh Sheera of Kajiwal (Goindwal Sahib) with 11,500 intoxicant tablets and a cash of Rs 3.15 lakh from their possession.

The accused were nabbed by a team of the local CIA Staff under the supervision of DSP (investigation) Sukhninder Singh. The Alto car (PB 02 BY 2352), in which the accused were travelling, has been impounded. The accused have been booked under Section 21, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.
