Amritsar, December 10

Two unidentified persons took away a car at gunpoint in the Ranjit Avenue area here on Sunday. It was the second carjacking incident in the past few days.

According to the police, family members of the car owner had come to the PITEX while the driver, identified as Gurbhej Singh of Bhalapind village, had parked the vehicle on the Ajnala road side.

The police said Gurbhej was sitting inside the car when two youngsters came and took him out of the car at gunpoint. Thereafter, they fled away with the car towards the Ajnala road side.

The Ranjit Avenue police have registered a case under Sections 379-B (2) and 34 of the IPC and Section 25, 54 and 59-A of the Arms Act against the unidentified suspects.

Gurbhej Singh said, “The car is owned by Surinder Kumar, a resident of Garden Avenue. He has several saloons in the city. I had taken his family to PITEX, which was being organised at Ranjit Avenue, in the car (PB-02-BY-2925). After dropping them, I parked the vehicle on the Ajnala road side near a private hospital. Thereafter, two youths came and knocked at the window. As I opened it, they pointed a pistol at me. They pulled me out of the car and fled towards the Ajnala side with the vehicle.”

Investigating officer Karam Singh said there was no CCTV camera near the spot and an investigation into the incident was on.

It is the second such incident in past one week. Earlier, four armed men took away a car from four persons near Nangal village, which falls under the Jandiala Guru police station here, on December 4.

The victim, Gurdial Singh, along with his friends, was returning from Chandigarh on a Hyundai Creta car when the accused travelling in another car intercepted them. Thereafter, they took away their car at gunpoint.

The accused also took away Rs26,000 in cash from the victims before escaping with the car.
