Amritsar, July 9

The district Health Department launched the diarrhea control fortnight from Girls Senior Secondary School, Mall road, at an event here on Monday.

The fortnight would conclude on July 21.

Civil Surgeon Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai and other senior officials attended the event. Schoolchildren were given Oral Rehydration Solution packets and were informed about its use in combating diarrhoea.

Dr Ghai said ORS packets would also be distributed in localities and ASHA workers had been assigned duties in this regard.

He said many precious lives, especially of children, are lost due to diarrhoea, which can be dealt with easily. He said ORS solution helped in keeping the body hydrated. Children suffering from diarrhoea would also be given zinc tablets, he added.

District Immunisation Officer Dr Ramesh Pal Singh said that the department had been running an awareness campaign at all government and private schools to educate children about hygiene.

He said that one of the main causes of diarrhoea was not washing hands properly.
