The death of 22-year-old Navneet Singh of Bhail Dhai Wala village, who died of drug overdose, has made the life of his grandmother and  father miserable.

Navneet‘s grandmother Charan Kaur is above 90 years has lost her eye-sight. She is bedridden for the last two decades. His father Kuldeep Singh (60) has been a habitual drunkard for the last over 20 years. The family holds three acres of agricultural land. Navneet was obedient and hardworking, recalls the family. He was perfect in all household works, including the kitchen, besides taking up cultivation of the fields.

Villagers say that Navneet’s morning used to begin with making bathing arrangements for his grandmother and then serving her meal besides looking after her other needs. His father Kuldeep Singh, too, was dependent on him.

Charan Kaur recalls that Navneet‘s mother died when he was just two years old. As he grew up, he mastered the art of homemaking as well as outdoor works. He was the only issue of the his parents.

Chand Singh, sarpanch of the village, says that no one knows when he got hooked to drugs. No one ever thought of tracking his activities as he had built a very good image of himself in the village. Navneet‘s body was recovered from the cremation ground of Vein Poin village on June 21. He had been missing for two days. It is said that he got himself injected with drugs and died.

Nowadays, Charan Kaur and Kuldeep Singh are killing time by lying on their beds without mattresses. They say that their lives are not worth living without Navneet.

The situation of the family of 24-year-old Gurjant Singh of Emma Khurd village is no different. Gurjant Singh too died of  drug overdose. Villagers question what would be the fate of his 22-year-old wife and one and a half year old son?

Dilbag Singh of Jodhpur, whose nephew Balwinder Singh (16) died of drugs, said curbing the drug menace didn’t appear to be an easy job as drug traders had identified unemployed youths in almost every village. They have been employing them for drug peddling.

Bird feed, saplings distributed

Religious bodies of Koharka village distributed saplings and feed for birds along with earthen pots among people at a camp in the village. A camp was organised on the occasion of Amavasya as people were out to pay obeisance at religious places. Sandeep Rishi, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), appreciate the efforts of the religious bodies and urged people to come forward to save the environment.
