Panic gripped Mustafabad when a group of persons allegedly fired several gunshots over an old enmity on Sunday evening. Though police officials, who visited the spot on Monday morning, said they could not establish whether or not firing had taken place, residents claimed that they provided empty shells of bullets to cops. The police said further investigation was under way.

Gurlal Singh stated to mediapersons that he had an enmity with a youth of the same area. In August last year, the accused had fired gunshots following which he had lodged a complaint with the police. He alleged that since the accused had political backing, the police instead of taking action, registered a case him (Gurlal). He was currently now on bail.

He alleged that the accused, along with his accomplices, turned up on Sunday night and started firing at the door of his house. Though people tried to stop him, he did not relent. Later, he fled the scene. People ran away from the spot in order to save themselves.

Rajwinder Kaur, SHO, Sadar police station, said a forensic team visited the spot. Only after receiving their report, the veracity of complainant’s claims would be confirmed, she said, adding that further investigation was under progress.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Lakhbir Singh said the incident was in his knowledge and he had asked the ACP (North) to look into it.
