Following the announcement of the state government for free-drop facility for stranded women, the Amritsar Police are making arrangements to implement it in the city and surrounding areas.

Sukhchain Singh Gill, Commissioner of Police, said, “The government announced it today. The office of Director General Police (DGP) will chalk out a plan and convey to us. We will implement it within a few days.”

The Police Commissioner said a separate helpline (1091) for women was already functional. “We will designate some vehicles and deploy women personnel on duty for this task. It would be arranged within one or two days,” he added

Meanwhile, the respondents at the Police Control Room complained of technical error on woman helpline number 1091. “We get calls for refilling of gas cylinders, mobile network complaints and other trivial issues on woman helpline. The callers at mobile number 9781101091 are genuine but most of them call from other states and other districts. Some websites displayed our local mobile number for Woman Helpline in Punjab. So, we receive only a few calls from the city and the district but more from outside,” said Sonam Bala, respondent at the Police Control Room.

The PCR employees disclosed that they received maximum calls complaining about domestic violence on woman helpline. “Women need the number of the local police station or officials concerned in case of domestic violence. It is quite rare but sometimes we get calls from girls about harassment in a moving bus. In that case, we immediately contact the police station concerned and ask its officials to intercept the bus,” added Sonam Bala.
