Man linked with Pak smugglers arrested with 260 gm of heroin

In a major catch, the CIA staff on Saturday nabbed a drug peddler, identified as Varinderjit Singh, alias Kaka (23), of Rajatal village and confiscated 260 gm of heroin from his possession.

Vavinder Mahajan, in charge of the CIA staff, informed that the police had a specific input that the accused was involved in drug trafficking so a naka (checkpoint) was laid near Gilwali Gate. Seeing the police party, he tried to escape but was caught. The contraband was seized later from the place of his work. He was brought on police remand for further interrogation.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the contraband had been smuggled from Pakistan. Varinderjit has his land across the barbed fence. He brought the contraband after hiding it in a hollow iron bar of the tractor-trailer. The police have also nominated his brother Jagroop Singh in the case, said Mahajan. Jagroop is currently in Dubai. They used to supply drugs in the Amritsar city, rural areas and also Tarn Taran.

“Investigations revealed that Jagroop had contacts with Pakistan-based smugglers. It was he who had ordered the contraband and the same was hidden in his agricultural land,” he said. He said Varindjit had sent Rs 3.50 lakh as payment of the contraband to his brother through hawala racket. He said interrogation was on to expose the entire drug network and the hawala racket. He said a look out circular would also be issued for Jagroop Singh and efforts would be initiated to get him extradited from Dubai.

A case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Division C police station.
