A Meerut-based couple has devised a novel way to sensitise the government and people on the adverse effects of increasing population. Dinesh Talwar (48) and his wife Disha took to “reverse march” on rotational basis to create awareness among people in this regard.

They were in Amritsar today. After paying obeisance at the Golden Temple, they carried on their reverse march in the Jallianwala Bagh complex with placard carrying slogan ‘Think for population’ and ‘Yatra 1857 ke shehar Meerut Se...kab rukegi abaadi”.

Dinesh and his wife told people that they have come from where the 1857 revolution was conceptualised. “When a neta comes to you, just question them about what will be their party’s vision about population control,” he said. The couple expressed regret over the fact that no government official had so far cared to acknowledge their letters.

“I will continue my mission till my last breath and my family has been a huge source of motivation,” he said.

“The government machinery is not bothered of the fact that the population of the country at the time of Independence was 33 crore, which has increased to 125 crore now,” Dinesh said.

“Post Independence, no concrete measures were taken to control population. The Bill to ban people having more than two children from contesting elections has still not been tabled in Parliament since 1992,” he said.

Around 25 years ago, Dinesh had started his agitation from his hometown. Associated with the insurance sector, Dinesh claimed that they had visited at least 120 cities, held hunger fast at Jantar Mantar, submitted 5,000 memorandums and  90,000 postcards were dispatched to the offices of the Prime Minister, ministers and officials in various cities. “I decided to take to streets in 1994 by reverse walking to project government’s negative and backward approach,” he said.

“Even our daughter Simran and son Yash have been contributing to promote the cause. I still dispatch one postcard daily since 1997, but got no response. We submit our attendance at the offices of deputy commissioners in every city we visit and dispatch the letter to the PM and the Home Department in this regard,” Disha said. “People certainly look back and question us about our motive. Till the government wakes up from its slumber, nothing can be expected,” she said.
