Amritsar, October 12

Even after the elapsing of two days, there has been no arrest in connection with the suicide of brother-in-law of Congress MP Gurjeet Aujla. Harpreet Singh (40) of Bua Nangali village had shot himself two days ago.

On the basis of a suicide note recovered from the spot and acting on the statement of his wife Amandeep Kaur, the Amritsar rural police had booked 17 persons for abetment to suicide.

In the suicide note, Harpreet had held around 17 persons, including several farmers, responsible for his extreme step. He was perturbed as the accused had borrowed a huge sum of money, but were not returning the same. One of the accused had allegedly grabbed his flat in Punjabi Bagh.

He had alleged that Mandeepak Singh of Dalam village had cheated him of Rs 90 lakh while Varun Sachdeva of Punjabi Bagh had grabbed his flat. The accused neither gave money to him nor vacated his flat. Among others who were booked include Manjinder Singh, Pavitarpal Singh, Bittu Pehalwan, Sahib Singh and 11 others.

Though the police have registered the case against those whose names were mentioned in the suicide note, more heads are likely to roll as Harpreet wrote in the suicide note that more names and the total amount which the farmers had borrowed from him could be ascertained from the ledger book.

Sukhjinder Singh, investigating officer, said the accused were absconding. He said raids were on to nab them while the police were seizing the records.
