Amritsar, July 13

The midday meal system is set to undergo a change in government schools of the city. School authorities will have to get food cooked on their premises. As per the present system, the food is being outsourced for the students.

The step is being taken due to poor quality of food being served to the students in the city as checked by the education officials.

The schools located in rural areas are already cooking meals on their premises.

The midday meal is a Central Government scheme implemented in coordination with the state government to provide meals to students of primary and upper primary classes at the government schools.

Last year, the scheme had suffered in rural areas due to lack of funds. However, the schools in the city were able to provide the meal under their contractual system.

Deputy DEO Rekha Mahajan said, “The contractual system will end. Cooks of the schools will be responsible for cooking and school officials will have to maintain a register as well for the same.”
