Amritsar, July 14

The cops, deployed at the mortuary of Government Medical College (GMC), have written to the authorities concerned, complaining about irregular power supply, the menace of rodents and absence of refrigerators for preserving the dead.

The guards stated that around three to four bodies were brought to the mortuary on a regular basis which were kept till autopsy. Sometimes, bodies have to be kept overnight as doctors decide to conduct the procedure next morning. The cops stated that rodents scurry on the mortuary premises through holes in the walls and sometimes nibble the bodies. They stated that they had reported the matter to the authorities concerned several times.

The employees face trouble in keeping the bodies overnight. The two-decade old AC plant has come of age and insiders say that it cannot be repaired.

In the complaint, the guards have also asked the authorities to find a solution to the problem of rats and ensure regular power supply.

ASI Balraj Singh, chowki in-charge, said they had asked the authorities to arrange small refrigeration unit at the earliest as bodies start decomposing in no time and emanate a foul smell which is unbearable for the guards. He said that it was difficult to guard the mortuary in the absence of proper facilities.
