Amritsar, October 14

A private hospital in association with the Rotary Club organised a seminar to increase awareness of robotic assisted knee replacement technique.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Avtar Singh, chief orthopaedic surgeon at the Amandeep Group of Hospitals, said, “The problem of pain in knee in local population is much greater as compared to in western countries.”

He attributed it sitting habits and postures, sedentary life style, less exercise and less physical work. He said with robot assisted knee replacement, there is no need to cut the bone. “Just damaged part of the bone is grinded with robotic help and knee replacement is done,” he said.

He added that blood loss is very little and the natural strength of the bone remains intact. Dr Avtar Singh said, “ Before the actual knee replacement with robot technique, a 3-D picture of knee is made on the computer by the orthopaedic surgeon, from which everything is crystal clear to the surgeon before starting the surgery and thus the possibility of human error is eliminated during operation.”
