Frequent traffic jams, lack of driving sense and violation of traffic rules at the intersections in front of Khalsa College for Women have become a nuisance for the commuters in large. A long queue of vehicles on all sides of the intersections was witnessed on Wednesday evening.

Most of the city roads continue to witness traffic jams. The area residents complain that vehicles coming from the Cantonment side through Mehnga Singh Saini Marg often prefer to drive on wrong side of the road to reach the intersections, which is just 50 m away.

“The sensible ones take the slip road but many who have a habit of breaking queues drive on wrong side of the main road. As a result the traffic coming from the university side is blocked,” said Amanpreet Singh, an area resident. He suggested that the provision of U-turn between Khalsa College and Putligar Chowk would improve the traffic flow condition.

The commuters suggested that if traffic cops were deputed on regular basis to check traffic signal violators it could also ease the flow of traffic. “The traffic lights at intersection near Khalsa College for Women were installed in recent years but people did not care for the signal. In such a situation a check on violators by the police could help,” suggested another resident Kirpal Singh. Shopkeepers say the problem of traffic jam is severe during schools and college timings.
