Amritsar, July 15

A woman, who had got an FIR lodged against her husband accusing him of subjecting her to unnatural sex and assault, has accused him of pressurising her for a compromise.

The suspects were arrested after the registration of the case, but they managed to get bail. She alleged that the accused have been threatening her and her family members to make them strike a compromise. She alleged that her husband Amanpreet Singh had stopped giving maintenance for the education of her children. She has been residing at her parent’s home.

The victim alleged that her husband and in-laws had been trying to influence the police with the help of the president of an organisation who had threatened to lodge a protest outside the police commissioner’s office in favour of her husband. “They had held a press conference and levelled baseless allegations against us,” she said.

On April 1, the Civil Lines police had booked her in-laws, including husband and four women of the family. The case was registered after the medical examination of the victim confirmed the assault. Among those booked include Amanpreet Singh (husband), Jagjit Singh, Onkar Singh and Joginder Singh. A case under Sections 377, 323, 506 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against them.

The victim had stated to the police that she was married to Amanpreet Singh, a local trader in 2004, who she alleged, was an alcoholic.

He had been “assaulting” her. She has two children from the marriage.

According to her, her in-laws started harassing her a couple of years after the marriage. She alleged later she came to know that her husband had illicit relations with a divorced woman living in the Gate Hakima area while her in-laws were supporting her husband.

When she started raising objection, her husband assaulted her and while her in-laws confined her to the house. An inquiry was conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (North).

During medical examination, her allegations of subjecting her to unnatural sex were found true.

The victim has urged the police not to give way under pressure.

According to the victim, she would be the one to win the legal battle against her husband. She hoped that appropriate action would be taken by the police and the judiciary to get her justice.

Amanjeet Kaur, Additional Station House Officer (SHO) of the Civil Lines police station, said, “The matter is being investigated.”
