Amritsar: A woman committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance after breaking of her engagement. Enraged over this, family members of the victim put her body on the road and staged a protest demanding registration of case against those who broke engagement. The protest was lifted following the assurance by the police to take appropriate action. Earlier, it has initiated action under Section 174 of criminal procedure code. Gurnam Singh, father of the victim and resident of Chetanpura village, stated to the police that his daughter Rajbir Kaur was engaged to a youth around a year ago and she was to marry on November 5. However, the boy's family broke engagement recently. Perturbed over this, the girl ended her life by consuming some poisonous substance. TNS
SGPC to honour 90 envoys
Amritsar: The SGPC has made elaborate arrangements to felicitate 90 envoys during their visit to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev at the Golden Temple on October 22. The delegation of ambassadors, led by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, will be informed about the Sikh religion and its history. A beautiful pandal will be installed at the Golden Temple entrance plaza where SGPC members and officials, led by its president Gobind Singh Longowal, will welcome the envoys.
