Bathinda, July 10

Members of the Anganwadi Mulazam Union, Punjab, protested in front of the mini-secretariat and blocked the Bathinda-Mansa highway on Tuesday.

The protesters demanded that the state government must increase their wages and bring these on a par with workers in Haryana.

They also demanded that the government should send children aged between three and six years back to the anganwadi centres from government schools.

Hundreds of protesters sat on the road and raised slogans against the administration and state government for not fulfilling their demands.

After blocking the highway for around half an hour, the protesters started moving towards the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Police personnel confronted the protesters while they tried to force their way inside the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Thereafter, there was a scuffle between female police personnel and protesters.

While braving scorching heat, some protesters fell unconscious on the highway. Decrying mismanagement of the administration, the protesters rued that there were no arrangements for drinking water and no ambulance was stationed at the protest venue.

While one of the protesters kept lying unconscious for quite some time, the police personnel remained mute spectators.

Earlier, hundreds of anganwadi workers gathered near the Grain Market area and raised slogans against the ruling government. Later, they marched up to the mini-secretariat.

Harjot Kaur, president of the union, said, “We had been holding protest marches and dharnas for quite some time now for our demands, but the authorities are trying to suppress our voice. The state government is not acceding to our demands. The anganwadi workers and helpers should be given allowances on the lines of Haryana. Our agitation will continue till the state government fulfils our long-pending demands.”

She said the anganwadi workers and helpers should be extended pension, gratuity and other benefits.

Meanwhile, the commuters had a harrowing time as the protesters had blocked the highway. They were seen either returning or taking different routes to reach at their destinations.

One of the commuters, Rajmeet Singh, rued, “We had to go to Amritsar but as the highway was blocked, we had to wait for around an hour. While it is understandable that the demands of protesters are not met by the government, why do the commuters have to bear the brunt each time?”
