Faculty members of the department of environment science and technology organised a special programme to celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity at Central University of Punjab here on Wednesday.

During the event, Vice-Chancellor RK Kohli interacted with faculty, scholars and students of the environment science and technology stream.

Prof VK Garg, Dean, Students Welfare, and Dean, School of Environment and Earth Science, welcomed the audience and introduced the programme theme.

Professor Garg said the UN had adopted May 22 as International Biodiversity Day to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. He said youngsters needed to follow the laws of nature and should work for sustainable development to preserve our biodiversity.

During his keynote address, the VC said, “The theme of 2019 IBD is “Our Biodiversity, Our Food and Our Health”. It signifies that biodiversity is vital for human health and well-being. The quality of our air, water and food we get will depend on the quality of the natural world maintained by us.”

He said recent studies indicated that biodiversity was vital for security and sustainability of food production.
