In a reversal of trend, the local government medical college has emerged as much sought after for MBBS course among high rankers in the state merit list of NEET-2018, in comparison to government medical college in Patiala and Amritsar.

In the first list of seat allotment in eight medical colleges released by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), many students have opted for Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, instead of Government Medical Colleges in Patiala and Amritsar.

The trend has changed as Patiala and Amritsar colleges used to be students’ favourites at one point of time. But now it’s Faridkot medical college .

Shruti Bansal, Simrat Pal Kaur, Shehbaz Singh and Kriti, four general category candidates, are eligible for Patiala college under government quota, but they opted for Faridkot college. As many as 24 general category and SC students chose Faridkot college over Amritsar medical college.

Under the general category quota at Patiala medical college, the first and last admitted candidates have scored 644 and 557 marks in NEET-2018, respectively. The marks of the first and last general category candidates in Amritsar government medical college are 643 and 540 and 590 and 538 in Faridkot medical college

Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice-Chancellor, BFUHS, said good infrastructure and better teaching techniques were the reasons why students were opting for the Faridkot college.

SGPC-owned Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College (SGRDMC), Amritsar, and the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Jalandhar, are at the same level as far as the preference of students is concerned.

Due to controversy over fee structure in SGRDMC, many students prefer PIMS for the management quota seats.
