Maur council accounts sealed

BATHINDA: The accounts of the Maur Municipal Council have been sealed over not depositing Employees Provident Fund (EPF) of Rs 74 lakh in time.

Bathinda, August 14

The accounts of the Maur Municipal Council have been sealed over not depositing Employees Provident Fund (EPF) of Rs 74 lakh in time.

The Provident Fund Commissioner has initiated action, which has pushed the local body into a fiscal crisis.

Contractors of the councils have not deposited the EPF fund of the employees for the past long time, due to which the commission has imposed a ban on the bank accounts of the councils. Employees of the council are worried that if the ban is not lifted this month, they would face problems in getting allowances and salary on time.

During a hearing over not depositing of the EPF for around three years, the Provident Fund Commissioner also asked for the records of the council.

Maur council president Gian Singh said the PF Commissioner had imposed a ban on the bank account over the non-payment of Rs 74 lakh of the EPF of employees for the past three-four years. The delay in depositing the money is due to the poor fiscal condition of the council.

Maur Municipal Council officials claimed that they had presented the record to the Commissioner and it seemed that the bank accounts would be operational soon.

“We have already told the contractor concerned to deposit their share of the outstanding fund into the account at the earliest,” they added. — TNS
